Movie and entertainment industry jargon for a form of participation in which the amount a recipient gets is a “share of the gross” or a “piece of the gross” i.e., a percentage of the gross receipts or total revenue a production generates before expenses are deducted (some minor expenses are usually still deducted, these are typically limited to taxes and the cost of collecting the revenue). A share of the gross, calculated from “dollar one” is the most desirable position to be in with respect to a production. Contrast with “the Net.” See also Adjusted Gross Participation.
