Someone granted powers to act on behalf of another and to legally bind the grantor of the power. In the United States, it is common usage for a lawyer, abbreviated from attorney-at-law. In the U.K. and Ireland, a Patent Attorney is the equivalent of a Patent Agent, i.e., someone who is a member of a specialized patent prosecution bar, but is not necessarily a lawyer.
