A device designed or intended to circumvent technology based intellectual property protections, typically copyright, but potentially other rights. Typically such devices either allow for unauthorised copying, use or viewing and decryption. Laws may treat the distribution of such devices as indirect or contributory infringement or another form of secondary infringement. In the United States and a number of other jurisdictions the supply of circumvention devices is potentially a crime as well as giving rise to a risk of claims under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
