An international organization named after its first Chairman, Prof. Claude Zangger, formed following the coming into force of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to harmonize the interpretation of nuclear export control policies for NPT Parties. By interpreting and implementing article III, paragraph 2, of the NPT, the Zangger Committee helps to prevent the diversion of exported nuclear items from peaceful purposes to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.
The members are Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The European Commission is permanent observer.
