A patent teaches an invention. If a prior art reference teaches not to practice aspects of the relevant technology as part of that invention, it teaches away. Teaching away can arise when distinguishing that prior art reference as not anticipating the invention and therefore not being a bar to patentability. See Prosecution History Estoppel.
