Expression often used to describe a patent strategy that seeks to cluster patents rather than having a diverse scattered patent portfolio. The analogy is typically to that of laying a minefield. There are, in principle, two choices that can be made, scatter the mines at random, or alternately place them around the most logical paths for an opponent to follow; the latter is more likely to be an effective obstacle.
