The Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks, a system that allows for the multi-jurisdictional registration of trademarks through WIPO. The Madrid Agreement was made in 1891 and revised at Stockholm in 1967; the revised agreement is known as the “Madrid (Stockholm) Agreement.” A number of countries and jurisdictions found it difficult to become members of the Madrid Agreement and hence a separate Agreement, the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement, which became effective December 1, 1995 was negotiated.
The United States and European Union are notably signatories to the Madrid Protocol, but not the Agreement (though many EU member states have signed the Madrid Agreement too.) The membership of both the Madrid Agreement and protocol are referred to as the Madrid Union.
