A patent application filed when a parent application is still alive, which continues to seek patent claims not granted in first or earlier patents issued in response parent application. For example, if a patent application is filed with twenty claims and the patent office agrees to issue a patent with ten of those claims, a continuation application could be filed prosecuting the remaining ten un-allowed claims – or indeed additional claims might be filed claiming support in the disclosure of the original application.
