A build of a software project is a completion of source code such that, when compiled, it will display certain basic functionality—the “first build” is often used as a criterion for a stage payment. In complex software development projects, to avoid large numbers of serious bugs building up in code or major digressions from design criteria, a condition is often inserted in the contracts requiring the software programs under development to be compiled and tested periodically (e.g., weekly, biweekly or monthly) and for subsequent development work to be carried out with respect to the latest build. A build usually has all of the basic components of the final software package, and each component is then further elaborated upon. Usually this is linked to a level of acceptable bugs in a build, excluding any Class A Bugs.
